Planning a vacation to Belize
In a thematic continuation of my post about the reopening of Greece, I want to explore the other countries that are making it easier for travelers who have been fully vaccinated. Belize announced the opening of their country to Americans who have completed their Covid immunizations. I have always been interested in Belize as an outside-the-box destination, maybe not the first, or even the second place you’d think to go on vacation. The natural beauty is captivating; from the beaches with bright blue Caribbean waters, to the dense jungles, and Mayan ruins. For this conversation, I spoke with Erynn Montgomery, Co-Founder of Landed Travel.

What is the process for arriving into Belize?
Currently, there are two ways: you can produce a negative Covid test taken at least 96 hours prior to arrival or present your completed vaccine card. Vaccinations have to have been completed at least 2 weeks prior to arrival. Travelers need to download the Belize health app for contact tracing. It’s incredibly easy to use. You also have to stay at Gold Standard/Safe Medal property that meets the government criteria for Covid protocols. All of the hotels we use meet this standard.
What is the current feeling about Covid in Belize?
Rates of infection remained low and they are taking it very seriously in order to keep tourism going. Belize is a nature destination, you have the jungle region, Mayan sites, and beaches. By nature of what they have to offer, you’re spread out and outdoors which eliminates a lot of risk. The government is very carefully monitoring statistics and ensuring proper protocol is kept.
At the hotel properties themselves, all staff will be masked at all times. Guests can take off masks when they’re away from others and when they’re outdoors.
Are you seeing any emerging trends?
We are seeing more interest than ever in visiting Belize from America. It is one of the best, unspoiled places in the Caribbean and still affordable. It is English speaking and the Belize Dollar is twice the US dollar, which is a widely accepted currency.
What are some unique or unexpected experiences?
We can take guests to villages of the Afro-Caribbean community and they can do cooking classes, weaving, dress up, and a drumming demonstration. I would say seeing some of the Mayan sites is important. There are ceremonial sites where they’ve buried Ancient Mayans. Cave tubing is pretty spectacular. You’re in a tube through a seven mile course and at the end, you get to the crystal chamber where you can see the remnants of Mayan royalty.
Do you expect there to be a limit on the amount of people let into certain sites?
Social distancing is inherent in many of the activities. We are reserving spots to leave space in between groups. If you have a larger family or group, it would typically be 8 guests to 1 guide.
What is the ideal length of stay? Do you recommend combining destinations?
We think the ideal trip is 1 week, spending 3 nights in the jungle and 4 nights at the beach.
Do you have any favorite resorts?
There are only about twelve 4 and 5 star hotels that we work with. The Coppola properties (Turtle Inn, Blancaneaux Lodge) are among my favorite.
Also Chaa Creek, a large nature reserve for a true jungle experience.
Are there any months to avoid?
The rainiest month is July. The rains will typically start in June and finish mid-November and you have low temperatures of 78 degrees and the hottest it gets is the mid-80’s plus around 75% humidity. The last time I was there, it was August and it was fantastic, we had no problems at all with the weather.
When it is those hotter months, you can book cottages near the sea to get a great breeze. With the ceiling fans, the heat is not a problem for most guests.
Should you spend any time in Belize City?
We do not promote spending time in Belize City.
Have the prices changed from previous years?
The prices are in line with what they were before. I have seen promotional rates to encourage last minute travel, but I did not see rate increases.
Are cancellation polices more flexible?
We honor the cancellation policy of every property. They vary quite drastically.
How are the mandatory Covid tests for return to the US being handled?
Most properties are arranging onsite testing to come back to US. They can produce results in as little as an hour. The cost is at the traveler’s own expense starting at $75/person.
We are highly recommending travel insurance for all itineraries.
Are there any villas you recommend?
We work a lot with Coral Caye and Sofia’s House, part of Turtle Inn. If you’re looking for the top level experience and have no budget, look at Gladden Private Island. (The private island is for exclusive use priced at $3950/night for two guests and $4950/night for four guests.)
One place I love is The Beach House in Placencia. This has amazing beach access and also great access to the jungle. You can really take advantage of everything the country has to offer. All of the main activities are within a 90 minute drive. There are plenty of activities nearby like waterfall rappelling, hiking, and the jaguar reserve. It is great for wildlife lovers. (The Villa is 4,000 square feet, has five bedrooms, a 50-foot infinity pool, private garden, roof deck, and an outdoor dining area.)
